IP Address. What is common between DNS and IP address?

Due to privacy concerns and other pertinent reasons, some internet users prefer to use a VPN service to disguise their actual IP address and encrypt their data. What's the difference when pinging/ pointing using the IP address or DNS?. Every time you visit a website, you are interacting with the largest distributed database in the world. This massive database is collectively known as the DNS.
